How to make Tassel Earrings with Embroidery Thread

Learn how to make tassel earrings with this super easy tutorial!

Tassel earrings are so easy to make, really fun, and you can make them in any and every color combination! The possibilities are literally endless!

Most tassel earrings are really big—which is really fun, but not so much my style anymore. So since I couldn’t find any smaller tassel earrings, I decided to make my own!

I wanted some rainbow-themed earrings for this tutorial, so each set of strands is a separate color. But you could easily make these with all the same color or in an ombre pattern or anything you can think of!

How to Make Tassel Hoop Earrings

First, gather your supplies. You’ll need hoop earrings, embroidery floss, and scissors.

Then prepare the embroidery floss. For this, first you need to decide how long you want your tassels to be in the end and then add an extra half-inch (I wanted mine to be around 1 ½ inches long, so my total starting length was 2 inches).

*Tip: Even if you want your tassel earrings to be shorter in the end, still start with at least 2 inches for your starting length so that you have plenty of thread to work with. You can always trim off more at the end.

Then multiply your starting length by however many strands you want in each little tassel section and cut the floss that length (I did 8 strands, so 8 strands times 2 inches = 16 inches). Cut another strand the same length, so that you have one for each earring.

Repeat however many times you need to end up with the number of tassel sections you want (I had 7 on each earring, so 14 strands total).

Then fold the strings in half and cut on the fold, and repeat until the strands are twice your starting length (4 inches, for mine shown here).

Take the first section of strands and fold them in half, placing the fold on the earring. Wrap the ends of the section around the earring and pull them through the little loop made by the center of the floss. Pull tightly.

Keep going with the rest of your floss sections until you’ve got them all on there. Repeat with the other earring.
